US GRADING SYSTEM

The US grading system doesn’t use numerical grading instead they use credit / grade system.
Grade Value Graduate Under Graduate
A 4.0 Excellant Excellant
B 3.0 Good Good/Average
C 2.0 Average Passing
D 1.0 Passing Failing
F 0 Failing Failing
For Undergraduate students, an ‘F’ will mean that they need to redo the course before advancing to any further class, while for Graduate students, even a ‘D’ will disqualify them from progressing further unless they secure better grade in their present courses. Thus, the grading system gets tougher as you progress from Undergraduate to a Graduate student.

Apart from these grades, some universities award other grades as well which are indicative of the performance of the students which might not be covered in the above grading system.

Some of these are:
  • IP – In Progress
  • NC – Not complete
  • NIC- Not Incomplete
  • W – Withdrawn
